MUCH LONGER BIO:
DJ Lazzy Laz grew up in Washington, D.C. when there was a curfew, Marion Barry was addicted to his Neti pot, and the basketball team was named The Bullets. Touche!
A saint, Lazarus started interning at age 14 at The Children’s Defense Fund and a local Headstart. She worked in psychology, public health, and education, and studied for her doctorate. She also served on the board of The Empower Program and the Young Leadership Committee for Seeds of Peace.
One workshop with Tina Fey and Jack McBrayer and the rest was herstory. Lazarus dropped out of her doctoral studies to do comedy. Her parents were thrilled. (One of these statements isn’t true.)
Her first time on stage, Lazarus won a stand-up contest she hadn’t even entered. The NY Resident awarded her (without irony) “New York’s Funniest Resident.” The local paper even offered Lazarus a trip to San Francisco and put her on their cover as a “rising star.” When Lazarus went to collect her prize, the paper refused to cover airfare and explained that the word “trip is ambiguous.” (Correct! The word trip is not ambiguous.)
It was the first of several unwittingly amusing titled contests Lazarus would win at comedy clubs. Since then, she has also performed stand-up, sketch, storytelling, and improv at BAM (Brooklyn Academy of Music), Upright Citizen’s Brigade Theater (NY & LA), Knitting Factory, Copacabana, Joe’s Pub, Caroline’s on Broadway, Comix, The Ice House in Pasadena (CA), People’s Improv Theater, P.S. 122, Comedy Central Stage (LA), Galapagos, Improv (DC, CA, & NY), Laugh Factory (NY & LA), Gotham Comedy Club, Pianos, Comic Strip, Magnet Theater, Steve Allen Theater (LA), and at The Kennedy Center.
Today, Lazarus splits her time between Los Angeles & Brooklyn.
